RN Alternative Recertification           Monday, September 06, 2010

The National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses (NBCHPN®) offers an alternative recertification process for registered nurses, as an option every renewal period.  The Registered Nurse Hospice and Palliative Alternative Recertification (RN HPAR) is to be submitted at the beginning of the year the certification is to expire.

The process requires the accumulation of 100 points of professional development activities over the preceding four years.  Points can be accrued through continuing education, academic education, professional publications, professional presentations, item writers workshop, self-assessment exam, precepting nursing students, and/or volunteer service in professional organizations.  Each area varies as to how the points are calculated and how many of the total points can be obtained by that method.  Each activity MUST correlate with the test content outline. More details and instructions are in the HPAR packet.

The packet is updated yearly.  Be sure that you are using the current RN HPAR packet (dated in the bottom left corner) which corresponds to the year that your recertification is due.  The packet contains the Timeline, Policy and Instructions, Test Content Outline, Application Instructions, Application, Category Logs, and Summary Log.  Please download the packet, print it out, complete and mail to NBCHPN®, One Penn Center West, Suite 229 , Pittsburgh , PA 15276-0100 after January 1st and to be received by March 1st of the given year.
